
The central character of the story is Gauri Chatterjee, a Bengali girl who grew up near Calcutta. Her family consisted of her father Alok Chatterjee, a well-respected man who was a strict but loving father, and her younger sister Kaya, who hoped to become a doctor. Gauri's mother was dead, so they lived with their mum's sister (Mashima), who took care of them.
Mahen Kapoor was Alok Chaterjee's best friend. He presented Alok with the idea of getting Gauri married to Shashank, who was his employee and also a good friend of his son Shiv. Initially, Gauri was apprehensive about getting married. However, she and Shashank soon fell in love. On her wedding day, she was shocked to see Shiv (whom she shared cold vibes with) sitting at the altar instead of Shashank. To save her family's honour, Mahen had forced Shiv to sit at the altar and marry Gauri...............
